Travels Continental U.S. on $300 of Diesel

When an automotive journalist and electronics engineer set off to travel the lower 48 states with a 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI, they had no idea the kind of fuel efficiency they could accomplish. “Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing,” said Wayne Gerdes, the journalist. “In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage with just a few simple fuel-saving techniques.” The team established a record substantiated by the “Guinness Book of World Records” by traveling 8,233.5 miles on just under $300 worth of diesel fuel. They averaged 81.17 miles per gallon, beating the old non-hybrid record of 77.99 mpg.

Fuel Economy Tips Help Add to Mileage

Gerdes says that just driving the Golf TDI normally will result in outstanding fuel mileage, but a few simple tips can help boost your results to near-record levels. The first tip is to follow the speed limit, as excess speed kills fuel mileage. Another tip is to be consistent with your accelerator. If you are traveling at 60 mph and come upon a hill, just keep your accelerator in the same position. You will lose a little speed going up the hill, but gain it coming back down the other side. The final advice is to let the rabbits trip the lights for you. Rabbits are the people who slam on the accelerator, then brake for the next red light. By maintaining a steady speed, you can often get there just as the light is about to trip. Test drive the Golf TDI for yourself at Chapman VW Tucson.

Record Setting Run Almost Doubles Estimated Fuel Mileage

By utilizing his own tips, Gerdes was able to almost double the 45 mpg the Golf is estimated to get on the highway. It is just one of five vehicles in the Volkswagen lineup that is estimated to get more than 40 mpg. The record run was done using only Shell ultra-low-sulfur fuel and Fuel Max tires from Goodyear. The Volkswagen Golf was also outfitted with a special gauge to measure fuel economy and GPS navigation to qualify for the Guinness record.

TDI Available in Golf, Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Touareg

With diesel engines available in five different models, you should be able to find a fuel-efficient vehicle to meet your needs. You can get nearly 600 miles on one tank of fuel, which can result in quick trips if you can convince passengers to skip the bathroom breaks. The innovations made in the diesel engines have created a much cleaner environment, prompting experts to predict that 10 percent of all vehicles on the U.S. roads will be diesel by 2020. Get ahead of the curve by examining all the options at Chapman VW Tucson.

Chapman Volkswagen is happy to hear that the Volkswagen assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. has sparked 500 new jobs at the nearby metal parts supplier.

The metal supplier Gestamp already supplies the VW Chattanooga factory and will increase its present operations and build a new plant in Chattanooga.

VW stated that Gestamp will be tripling its capacity by investing $180 million. Volkswagen swapped a stretch of land 59 acres in size with the City of Chattanooga as well as the county in exchange for a land parcel of similar value. The swapped property will be used to expand the Gestamp facility.

Not only is Gestamp getting business from the Volkswagen plant nearby, they are also getting business from the automaker’s consolidation of stamping vendors that are located in various states.

VW is saving transportation costs by moving the stamping operations closer to the Chattanooga location. This is the perfect example of cost savings in the supply chain that auto companies love.

Politicians, union opponents and labor leaders are paying close attention to the new metal supplier jobs and the VW’s plant ripple effect.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has been trying to get a foothold in these companies for years and they lost an election in 2014 after trying to organize the factory workers. Even though the union stated that it has 55% support from the hourly workers from one of the local chapters earlier in the year, no union has been formed yet.

With the added economic activity that will result for the Volkswagen assembly plant, the issue may again be brought to the table on whether a union would actually be needed at the facility.

In a press release. VW stated that Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and U.S Sen. Bob Corker vehemently opposed the campaign by the UAW and they both work very hard to help with Gestamp’s expansion.

The newly expanded Gestamp plant will have hot-stamping technology which will be used to make metals lighter and harder while reducing environmentally harmful carbon emissions.

Francisco J. Riberas, Gestamp CEO, stated that Chattanooga is an important part of the strategic growth of Gestamp in North America.
