‘The People’s Car’ Keeps on Rollin’
With more than 21 million VW Beetles sold in the past 70 years, the aptly named “People’s Car” is firmly engrained in the history of the automotive industry. The Volkswagen Beetle is still selling strong, with a couple of special editions added to the familiar coupe and convertible. The Beetle Dune is a nod to the dune buggies of the 1960s, but you probably won’t want to take this Bug on anything softer than a dirt road. VW provided the Dune with a beefed up suspension and wider track, along with a Sandstorm Yellow paint job that blends in with the shoreline. The Beetle Denim is a convertible that reminds you of a pair of stonewashed jeans, complete with denim top and two-tone seating surfaces. See the entire Beetle inventory with a trip to Chapman VW Tucson.
Original Beetle Factory a Casualty of WWII
The Beetle was first conceptualized in Germany during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1934. The first car came off the production line in 1938, but as the country got more involved in European domination and Allied retaliation, the manufacturing plant was eventually reduced to rubble. Production began again in the late 1940s, supplying the popular little car to Europeans and the Allied occupation. It first came to the United States in the early 1950s, and proved the perfect car for the counterculture of the 1960s. Flower Power stickers bedazzled the Beetles and the VW Bus of that era as the vehicles provided simple basic transportation for everyone from hippies to housewives. The mid-century Volkswagen Beetle is still a highly-sought collector car, especially if you can get your hands on a split rear window model that was produced prior to 1953.
Modern Beetle Full of Technology
The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle is the same basic shape as its predecessors, but that’s about where the comparison ends. With a turbocharged engine that delivers 210 horsepower, sport seats and a steering wheel with audio controls and paddle shifters, it provides a completely different driving experience than the Bug your granddad drove. New driver assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert and park pilot help you avoid collisions and make maneuvering through tight urban areas easier than ever. Head to Chapman VW Tucson before May 2 and you can lease at 2016 Beetle with the 1.8T engine for just $189 a month for 36 months. There’s also a program where qualified buyers can purchase a Beetle for just 1.9 percent financing for 60 months.
